Dr Ryan McConnell is a Sydney-based interventional radiologist who treats a broad range of vascular and non-vascular conditions using image-guided, minimally invasive techniques. He is Head of the Department of Interventional Radiology at Northern Beaches Hospital and holds visiting medical officer appointments at Mater Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Ryan performs approximately 1,500 interventional procedures each year. His areas of particular interest include prostate artery embolisation, varicocele embolisation, uterine fibroid embolisation, pelvic venous disease and complex venous intervention. He also treats varicose veins through Vein Doctors Sydney.
Approach to care
A consultation with Ryan begins with understanding your symptoms, reviewing your investigations and discussing what you hope to achieve. He explains whether an interventional radiology procedure is suitable, what it involves and what recovery may look like. Where medical treatment, surgery or further assessment may be more appropriate, he discusses those options too.
Ryan works closely with referring GPs, urologists, gynaecologists, vascular surgeons and other specialists. His involvement extends from consultation and treatment planning through to the procedure and follow-up care.
Training & experience
Ryan graduated in medicine from Flinders University, where he was awarded the Surgery Prize for achieving first place in surgery. He subsequently completed specialist radiology training and an interventional radiology fellowship at Royal North Shore Hospital. He then undertook a further two-year fellowship in interventional neuroradiology, providing additional advanced training in complex vascular anatomy, catheter-based techniques and image-guided intervention.
Ryan has a particular interest in medical education and specialist training and previously served as Director of Training for Radiology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) and a member of the Interventional Radiology Society of Australasia (IRSA) and the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE).
