Chronic Joint and Tendon Pain

Chronic pain generally refers to pain persisting for more than 3 months. Chronic joint and tendon pain is a very common condition affecting many parts of the body and people of all ages. Typically these are overuse injuries and usually the pain resolves. However, occasionally the pain persists or recurs.

Typical problems

  • Anterior knee pain
  • Jumpers knee
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfers elbow
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Persistent pain post knee joint replacement

What causes the pain?

Studies have shown that chronic pain is associated with the development of tiny new abnormal blood vessels at the site of pain. This is the body’s response to the ongoing injury. However, unfortunately this is not effective in curing the pain. In addition, tiny abnormal pain nerve fibres develop with the blood vessels perpetuating an on-going cycle of recurrent pain and disability.

The growth of these new and abnormal blood vessels and nerve fibres is well recognized as a significant cause of chronic joint/tendon pain and is the target of numerous treatment options.
