Medical Glue Treatment (VenaSeal)
What is medical glue treatment (VenaSeal)?
VenaSeal is the newest and most innovative medical glue treatment option for varicose veins. The procedure involves delivering a small amount of medical-grade adhesive to seal the diseased vein and reroute blood flow to healthy veins. It is a minimally invasive, quick procedure with minimal downtime.
How does VenaSeal work?
VenaSeal is a unique medical-grade adhesive called “Cyanoacrylate”. When injected into a vein, it immediately seals the vein without spreading to other locations. Over time, the treated vein is resorbed by the body.
How is the VenaSeal treatment performed?
Under ultrasound guidance, a catheter (hollow tube) is inserted into the diseased vein.
Medical glue (VenasealTM) is placed in the diseased vein via a small catheter.
External pressure is applied to the treated vein to adhere the vein walls together.
The catheter is removed, and a small bandage is applied to the access site.
The procedure takes approximately 60 minutes.
Aftercare for VenaSeal
Regular daily activities can be resumed immediately following a VenaSeal procedure, including standing, walking, and sitting.
Patients are encouraged to walk for 20 minutes daily during the first two weeks following treatment.
During the first 5-7 days, patients should refrain from hot baths, heavy lifting, and rigorous physical activity.
A follow-up appointment and ultrasound with Dr McConnell will be organised for 1 week after the procedure.
Why choose the VenaSeal treatment?
The VenaSeal procedure is a minimally invasive procedure with minimal discomfort and a short recovery time.
There are four noticeable benefits of the VenaSeal treatment:
A single needle prick is required. Other varicose vein treatments often require multiple needle pricks.
No pain or discomfort during the procedure. To seal off varicose veins, VenaSeal uses medical-grade antibacterial glue. Apart from the initial local anaesthetic, the only sensation patients feel during the procedure is the doctor pressing on the leg to seal the vein.
Fast recovery time. A quick recovery is important. Patients recovering from VenaSeal treatments typically take one day to recuperate, as opposed to surgeries that may require days or weeks. This enables you to get back to enjoying your regular activities as fast as possible.
Compression stockings are not needed. Since the medical glue immediately seals the diseased vein, no compression stockings are required post-procedure.
Side effects and complications associated with VenaSeal
The VenaSeal procedure is considered a very safe procedure. However, as with all procedures, there are several possible complications including:
In some instances, treated veins may become inflamed, which can be minimised with anti-inflammatory medication.
Some tenderness and bruising along the treatment site may occur.
